Kentucky tornadoes: Biden reaches out to affected US states.

US President Joe Biden has said the government will do everything it possibly can to help central areas of the country devastated by tornadoes. Mr Biden has signed a Federal Emergency Disaster Declaration, releasing funds for Kentucky, the worst affected state. He said the storms were among the largest in US history. More than 70 people died in Kentucky in Friday night's storms, including dozens in a candle factory, and the death toll is expected to rise above 100. Emergency teams are searching through the rubble of the factory, in the town of Mayfield, which was hit directly. More than 40 people have been rescued out of some 110 in the factory but Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said it would be a miracle if anyone else was found alive. BBC North America correspondent Peter Bowes says the conditions facing the authorities are hugely challenging, with the police station in Mayfield destroyed and firefighters' equipment damaged. Tens of thousands of people in the state are also w

Without E-levy, how do we give farmers subsidies – Agric Minister asked.

The Minister of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), has called on farmers and Ghanaians as a whole to embrace the government’s proposed electronic levy (e-levy) which was announced in the 2022 budget statement by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, last month. According to Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the Akufo-Addo administration was working assiduously to raise money to support farmers in the country, and that the e-levy would help in that regard. The Finance Minister who introduced the levy in the 2022 budget told Parliament a huge chunk of the proceeds will support entrepreneurship. The Agric Minister said the National Democratic Congress’ entrenched position on the levy is very worrying. Dr. Afriyie Akoto made the assertion when he visited one of the government’s built warehouses at Gambaga in the North East Region on his first-day visit to the region as part of his 13-day tour of the northern sector. “There are two markets in Ghana; the subsidized fertilizer market, which is the plantin

Parliament contributing to huge government expenditure – Prof. Ebo Turkson

An associate professor at the Department of Economics at the University of Ghana, Prof. Festus Ebo Turkson is suggesting that the size of Parliament should be reduced to cut down on government expenditure.  According to him, the size of Ghana’s economy and the population does not merit the huge number of parliamentarians it has. Speaking on   The big issue   on Saturday, Prof. Ebo Turkson said proposals for the size of Parliament to be increased by 13 more seats does not make governance or economic sense especially given the inadequate revenue of the country.“The time has come when we need to have a discussion on whether our parliamentary system is not having an overbearing impact on our expenditures as well. I think that a Ghana with the size of our economy and population shouldn’t have more than 150 members of Parliament, especially when we have a local government system right from the assembly member to the assembly that is already in charge of the grassroots governance,” he said.He

Government’s e-levy policy ill-timed – Telecoms chamber

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications, Ken Ashigbey, has said that the timing for the introduction of the 1.75% levy on electronic financial transactions is ill-timed.  He said the chamber was not consulted by the government on the proposal before the announcement was made in Parliament on Wednesday, November 17, 2021.  “When we got this information, it was surprising because there had not been any prior engagement to discuss this e-levy. The timing of taxing this nascent industry is not now, and we needed to let it [the industry] grow, defeat cash before we attempt any form of taxation,” he said.  The Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, during the reading of the 2022 budget before Parliament on Wednesday said the government is introducing a 1.75% tax on electronic payments as part of efforts to raise revenue to support government’s development agenda including maintenance of roads.  The transactions to be impacted by the tax include Mobile Money tran

Mahama criticizes government over unwillingness to acknowledge economic problems

T he 2020 Presidential Candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticised the Akufo-Addo government for being unwilling to listen to the concerns of the people amidst the dire economic situation in the country. Describing the governance of the incumbent administration as “a tragedy” Mr. John Mahama said “we have a government completely unwilling to acknowledge the problems and even begin the processes to address them.” He noted that instead, the government assumes the issues can be “wished-away through sloganeering, public relations, populism, divisive rhetoric, and plain political deception.” Speaking at a public lecture to climax his ‘Thank You’ tour on Wednesday, the former President observed that these actions and inactions of the government have been detrimental to the country’s development. “The most pressing problem is the impact of the ailing economy on livelihoods, prospects and dreams. EC must take steps towards creation of Buem constituency now – Kofi Adams

Member of Parliament for Buem in the Oti Region, Kofi Adams, has described as unfortunate the failure of the Electoral Commission to present a constitutional Instrument to parliament to create the Guan constituency.  During the 2020 general elections, inhabitants of the area took part in the presidential election but did not vote in the parliamentary election due to a directive from the Electoral Commission (EC) because of the absence of a constituency.  The Constitutional Instrument needed to create the constituency could not mature in the 7th Parliament.  The delay is unfortunate because this is something that the Electoral Commission should have speedily acted on because they were the ones who wrote the letter indicating that the area that now forms the guan district will not take part in the elections of MPs on the 7th December 2020… From then till now, they [EC] should have taken the necessary steps to bring a C.I. before this parliament to create a constituency,” he said. Transport Ministry endorses directive to ban ‘aboboyaa’ from motorway

The Ministry of Transport has endorsed the directive of the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, banning the use of tricycles popularly known as Aboboyaa on the Accra-Tema motorway. The order which took effect from November 1 has led to the seizure of a number of the tricycles along the major highway. Some members of the Minority in Parliament, have contended that the Regional Minister does not have the right to give such a directive, but the Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah in a  Citi News  interview said the various Metropolitan Municipal and District Assemblies have the legal backing to undertake such a move aimed at regulating transport in their respective localities. “Transportation is something which is done in district assemblies and localities. The district bye-laws allow the assemblies and regional authorities to come out with the way they want their transport system to run,” he said. Henry Quartey has himself responded to critics who have challenged his

Beverage market in Ghana worth ¢3.85bn, Kumasi tops with highest consumption – Report

The beverage market in Ghana is worth ¢3.85 billion, of which domestic production dominates, accounting for 92% of the total market size, a survey by local research firm, Firmus Advisory has revealed. This is based on the number of bottles produced, consumed and the value of imports. However, the market size of imported beverages is estimated at ¢300 million, representing 8% of the market share. The report which sampled consumers in Accra, Kumasi and Sekondi-Takoradi found out that demand for beverage consumption has shot up, as most consumers drink 3 to 5 times each week. It identified that the size of the beverage market keeps expanding and is expected to grow rapidly year-on-year, going forward. 77% of bottles of beverage consumed were non-alcoholic, whilst 23% were alcoholic. Despite the impact of Covid-19 on the Ghanaian economy last year, the number of beverage products consumed slightly outpaced that of 2019. The price of alcoholic beverage was also more expensive than non-alc
