Government can’t afford to reduce taxes on fuel; we’ll lose GH¢4bn revenue –Prez Akufo-Addo.

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has dismissed calls on the government to reduce taxes on petroleum products. He said taking such an action will significantly affect the government’s revenues. Addressing the 2022 May Day parade at the Independence Square in Accra, he said the government risks losing about GH¢4 billion if it makes any such move. He added that it is even more untenable because the government is rather looking for more avenues to raise money. “Removing taxes on petroleum products will reduce government revenues by some GH¢4 billion. At this time, when we are determined to expand government revenues in order to increase our capacity to finance our own development, can we afford to reduce tax revenues by GH¢4 billion?” he quizzed. Fuel prices in Ghana have risen sharply in Ghana in the last six months, although they have stayed the same for almost a month. Amidst the numerous complaints from consumers that the situation is causing a strain on their finances as th

It said on March 7, this year, the complainant left the victim and her brother in the care of their elder sister. Whiles the victim was playing with her brother, the prosecution said the brother left the house on the blind side of the victim. It said realising that her brother was not in the house, the victim decided to go and look for him. The prosecution said the victim saw her brother seated in front

Allow independent probe into COVID expenditure if you’re ‘clean’ – Mahama urges government.

Former President John Mahama has challenged the Akufo-Addo government to prove him wrong by allowing an independent forensic audit into how COVID-19 funds were used. According to him, the government did not make prudent use of the funds it received to fight the pandemic. Speaking at the 4th Summit of the NDC Professional Forum in the Ashanti Region, Mahama said he stands by his claim that the government misused the Covid-19 funds by, among other things, using the money to finance the New Patriotic Party’s election 2020 campaign. “Parliament presented a motion to ask for a parliamentary investigation into how the COVID-19 funds were used. Who were those who threw out that motion? It was the NPP administration. The only way you can prove me wrong and say that that money was not used for election 2020 is to allow for an independent forensic audit into how the money we received during the COVID pandemic was used. Prove me wrong,” he threw the challenge.Meanwhile, Jonh Mahama has also acc

This revelation was delivered by the prominent talk show presenter in an interview that has gone viral on different social media sites, including Twitter and Facebook. “America is not what most young Africans imagine it to be because individuals like him wish they could live in countries like Ghana, where they would be secure forever,” he said. Alleged Fake Pregnant Woman Did Not Attend Antenatal At Takoradi Hospital

Dr George Peprah, a physician specialist at the Takoradi hospital has said, Josephine Paanyin Simon, the fake pregnant woman, only visited the hospital for fertility tests and not antenatal. “Her visit to our facil ity was for an oestrogen test for infertility assessment, we don’t have records on her at the antenatal unit,” Dr Peprah added. Dr Peprah explained that doctors usually did not take patients through oestrogen tests for fertility but rather for infertility assessment. The lawyer said “What you are telling the court is not true. Because you do an oestrogen test to check fertility first before you check infertility in women” but the doctor answered in the negative which allowed the judge to adjourn the case to Feb

Government’s spin on E-levy disrespectful – Kofi Bentil

Senior Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, says the inconsistencies in government’s communication over the Electronic Transaction Levy Bill (E-levy) amounts to a disrespect of people’s intelligence.  He said government has not been objective in its consultations over E-levy as certain groups are deliberately left out, creating room for some selected persons to rain praises on the policy. The private legal practitioner described the tax policy as “unpopular” when he was hosted by Joy News’ Samson Lardy Anyenini on Newsfile on Saturday. He added that the position of government officials and how they communicate about the proposed levy is what gives the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) the room to oppose it. “Sometimes, it’s very interesting how people come and spin and expect that we believe it, assuming that we don’t know what is going on. They’ve gone back to do the so-called consultations and in doing that, they are creating these crowds of selected people and

Akufo-Addo’s promise to protect public purse now a mirage – Catholic Bishops

The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to take immediate steps to halt the wanton dissipation of the country’s resources by politicians and their cronies for personal gains. The president of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, Most Rev. Philip Naameh, who made the call at this year’s plenary assembly of the association in Wa, said the practice has led to high perceived corruption and corruptible practices among the ruling class which is taking a toll on the national economy and worsening the poverty situation in the country. Though poverty stares us in the face, it appears lost to those with power. The expressed commitment of the president of the republic to protect the public purse, a promise that citizens welcomed, seems to be an illusion now. Are those managing the public purse not concerned about waste and misapplication of resources that belong to all Ghanaians? Can this be referred to as irresponsible use of power or the lac

Sosu’s case: You’re attempting to undermine Bagbin’s authority – Minority tells Majority

The Minority in Parliament has accused the Majority Caucus of deliberately ignoring the facts surrounding the attempted arrest of the Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, and the Speaker’s handling of same. The Majority had suggested that the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, seemed to be instituting new rules that seem to undermine the rule of law without any prior discussions with the leadership of the house. In a statement on Thursday, the  Majority Caucus  said the refusal of the Speaker to release the legislator to assist with investigations into alleged offenses is of extreme concern. It said the Speaker’s handling of the case, which is troubling, was a shift away from what his predecessors had done in similar cases in the past. But the Minority, in a statement on Thursday, disagreed with the Majority’s claims, insisting that the Speaker was only trying to ensure that the Police follows standard procedures in inviting the MP for questioning. "The police
