1.75% E-Levy is lowest tax in Ghana – Ursula

Communications and Digitalization Minister, Ursula Owusu Ekuful believes the 1.75 percent tax on electronic financial transactions, also known as the E-Levy when compared to other taxes introduced in Ghana, is the lowest so far.

She made this claim during the maiden edition of government’s town hall meeting on E-Levy held on Thursday, January 27th at Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

The townhall meeting, according to government is part of measures to engage the public and bring them to speed on the need to implement the policy, ahead of the relaying of the controversial 1.75 percent Electronic Transfer Levy in Parliament.

Speaking at the government’s town hall meeting in Koforidua, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful also charged Ghanaians to embrace the E-levy as it holds the key to solving the country’s unemployment and infrastructural problems.

“In 2008 the government of president Kufour introduced the communications services tax in August of that year. And it became another source of income for national development. That tax was introduced at the rate of 6% which was later increased to 9%. E-levy is being introduced at the lowest rate for any tax in Ghana comparatively at 1.75% less than 2%. In other countries, digital taxes are being introduced at the rate of up to 10%, and they are paying, thus the UK, and we go and seek loans from them to finance our development,” she noted. The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta also assured that government has put in place mechanisms to ensure monies accrued from the E-levy are used judiciously. “Let’s really hold our MPs feet to the fire to let them know that we understand who we are as a people, a proud nation who want to pave their own way.” The E-Levy has been vehemently opposed by the minority and other stakeholders. While many have raised concerns about the extra burden the E-levy will put on Ghanaians, others have also questioned how government will account for monies accrued from the levy. Government is projecting $1.15 billion returns from the imposition of the proposed 1.75%.

Government can’t afford to reduce taxes on fuel; we’ll lose GH¢4bn revenue –Prez Akufo-Addo.

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has dismissed calls on the government to reduce taxes on petroleum products. He said taking such an action will significantly affect the government’s revenues. Addressing the 2022 May Day parade at the Independence Square in Accra, he said the government risks losing about GH¢4 billion if it makes any such move. He added that it is even more untenable because the government is rather looking for more avenues to raise money. “Removing taxes on petroleum products will reduce government revenues by some GH¢4 billion. At this time, when we are determined to expand government revenues in order to increase our capacity to finance our own development, can we afford to reduce tax revenues by GH¢4 billion?” he quizzed. Fuel prices in Ghana have risen sharply in Ghana in the last six months, although they have stayed the same for almost a month. Amidst the numerous complaints from consumers that the situation is causing a strain on their finances as th...
