Seven people have died after a boat capsized on the Late Volta in the Kwahu North District of the Eastern Region.
Police Public Relations Officer in the Region DSP Ebenezer Tetteh said the incident occurred at 6pm on Thursday, April 14, 2022. A passenger boat with 20 persons travelling on the Volta Lake from Dzemeni to Havorkope on the Dwarf Island capsized mid-way after they were caught up in a heavy storm. Seven persons – five female and two males between the ages of 31 and 60 years – got drowned.The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at a private mortuary on the island as police commence investigations. The District National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Operations Officer, Karrah Joseph Eric, said 13 others onboard the boat have since been rescued after a search and rescue efforts by the boat owners. “The search efforts began since last night, it hasn’t ended yet. Due to the nature of the river, it is likely that some other passengers on board may have drifted to other places,” he said.
